Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, comments and an analysis of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer who has been awarded prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. She is the author and director-general of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit website that explores representations of women in popular stories of culture. As well as working to expose the issues surrounding the harassment and targeted attacks on women, other minorities in online spaces she is committed to breaking the stereotypes associated with pop culture. Sarkeesian, who holds the degree of Master's in Social and Political thought at York University, is a sought after public speaking. She has spoken at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. She was fascinated by the gender issue and feminist movements from a very early age. In 2009, when she was continuing to study at the university level she launched her Feminist Frequency site. She had a plan to create a web series examining gender-based representations in video games. However, she was the subject of a harassment online campaign. But the assault did not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. She has won numerous awards in recognition of her many notable contributions to the field of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit focused on the portrayal of women in pop media stories.
